Description
VIP (Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide) is a naturally occurring 28-amino-acid neuropeptide, released by both neurons and immune cells and recognized by VIP/PACAP receptors expressed across a wide range of tissue types. The way a thermostat coordinates a building's separate heating zones, VIP is studied as a signaling molecule investigated across the nervous, immune, and vascular systems in research models. Independent research groups have examined VIP across a range of experimental contexts, from autoimmune disease models to circadian clock synchronization in the suprachiasmatic nucleus.
Benitez et al., 2018 (Journal of Immunology) studied VIP administration in mouse models of experimental autoimmune myocarditis and atherosclerosis, examining inflammatory infiltration, regulatory T cell populations, and atherosclerotic plaque burden. Delgado and Ganea, 2013 (Amino Acids) reviewed VIP's receptor signaling and its documented roles across immune cell populations in inflammatory and autoimmune disease models.
