Description
LL-37 is the sole cathelicidin-family peptide identified in humans, structurally related to a broader family of host-defense peptides found across mammals. The way a building's alarm system alerts several response teams at once, LL-37 has been characterized in the literature as a signaling molecule with chemotactic activity toward multiple immune cell types, alongside its originally identified antimicrobial domain.
Zanetti (Journal of Leukocyte Biology, 2004; PMID 12960280) documented LL-37 as chemotactic for neutrophils, monocytes, mast cells, and T cells in cited research, alongside the cationic antimicrobial domain shared across the cathelicidin family. A companion review (Current Issues in Molecular Biology, 2005; PMID 16053249) examined LL-37's place within the innate host-defense literature in more depth. Tomasinsig et al. (Journal of Peptide Science, 2009; PMID 19472166) compared structure-activity relationships across primate cathelicidin orthologues in laboratory assays, finding that antibacterial potency and cytotoxicity varied with peptide charge and secondary structure.
