Description
Livagen (Lys-Glu-Asp-Ala) is a synthetic tetrapeptide belonging to a class of short peptide bioregulators studied for site-specific activity on chromatin structure in aged human cell cultures. The way a key that fits a specific lock can open what was previously sealed shut, Livagen has been investigated in the literature for its documented activity on condensed regions of heterochromatin in lymphocytes from older research subjects.
Lezhava, Jokhadze, Monaselidze, Buadze, Gaiozishvili, Sigua, Khujadze, Gogidze, Mikaia, and Chigvinadze (Georgian Med News 2023; PMID 37042594) examined the tetrapeptide Lys-Glu-Asp-Ala, marketed as Livagen, alongside three other short peptide bioregulators for its influence on condensed "old" chromatin in cultured lymphocytes from individuals 75 to 88 years old, using differential scanning calorimetry and molecular-cytogenetic methods, and reported that the compound was associated with decondensation of total heterochromatin and satellite-stalk regions of acrocentric chromosomes without affecting structural pericentromeric heterochromatin. Dzhokhadze, Buadze, and Dvalishvili (Georgian Med News 2007; PMID 17921545) examined Livagen's activity on radiation-induced adaptive response in lymphocyte cultures from individuals aged 72 to 86, exposing cells to low-level and higher-level gamma radiation together with copper chloride and reporting a measurable shift in the adaptive-response pattern of Livagen-treated cultures relative to untreated controls. Dzhokhadze, Ganozishvili, and Lezhava (Georgian Med News 2008; PMID 18830022) studied Livagen and Epithalon in lymphocyte cultures from different age groups, examining the peptides' influence on the expression of chromosome fragile sites following heavy metal ion exposure.
