Description
Hexarelin is a synthetic hexapeptide of the growth hormone-releasing peptide family, sharing structural features with GHRP-2 and other members of this peptide class. The way a single tool can be fitted with more than one attachment, hexarelin has been characterized in the literature as engaging more than one receptor system — the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) shared with the endogenous ligand ghrelin, and the scavenger receptor CD36, identified separately in cardiac tissue research.
Bodart, Febbraio, Demers, McNicoll, Pohankova, Perreault, Sejlitz, Escher, Silverstein, Lamontagne, and Ong (Circ Res 2002; PMID 11988484) identified CD36 as a hexarelin-binding protein in rat cardiac membranes, and observed that hexarelin activation of CD36 in perfused hearts produced a concentration-dependent increase in coronary perfusion pressure, an effect absent in CD36-null hearts. Mao, Tokudome, and Kishimoto (J Geriatr Cardiol 2014; PMID 25278975) reviewed the published literature on hexarelin's receptor-mediated cardiovascular signaling, noting hexarelin's binding to both GHSR and CD36 and its comparative chemical stability relative to ghrelin. Deghenghi (J Endocrinol Invest 2008; PMID 18787392 — title-level citation; full-text verification pending) characterized hexarelin as a multi-receptor peptide, consistent with its documented activity across these distinct binding sites.
