Description
GHK-Cu is the copper(II) complex of the naturally occurring human tripeptide glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine (GHK), first identified in human plasma. GHK carries a high affinity for copper ions, similar to the copper-transport site found on albumin. The way a key ring holds several keys together, the GHK-Cu complex is studied for how it coordinates activity across multiple cellular signaling pathways involved in tissue remodeling.
Pickart documented GHK-Cu's activity across collagen and glycosaminoglycan synthesis pathways, metalloproteinase modulation, and fibroblast and keratinocyte proliferation in a review of tissue-remodeling research models (Pickart, J Biomater Sci Polym Ed, 2008 — PMID 18644225). A later review examined GHK-Cu's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in the context of oxidative-stress research models relevant to cognitive-aging research (Pickart et al., Oxid Med Cell Longev, 2012 — PMID 22666519). A 2015 review revisited GHK's documented activity across cellular pathways relevant to skin-regeneration research, including gene-expression modulation in cultured cell models (Pickart et al., Biomed Res Int, 2015 — PMID 26236730).
