Crystagen (Glu-Asp-Pro, EDP) is a three-residue synthetic peptide from the Khavinson short-peptide family. The Khavinson tripeptides were derived through fragment analysis of tissue-specific polypeptide preparations — Crystagen falls in the immune/thymus lineage of that catalog, alongside dipeptides such as KE (Vilon, Thymogen). The way ultrashort peptides can pass through cell and nuclear membranes and interact with regulatory DNA elements has been a central theme of the Khavinson research program for four decades. Chervyakova et al. (2014) examined Crystagen in a comparative in vitro study of short peptides on spleen tissue during aging, reporting that Crystagen activated the B-cell compartment of the splenic immune system in the model. Khavinson et al. (2020, Stem Cell Reviews) reviewed how Khavinson tripeptides interact with epigenetic regulators of cell differentiation across immune, epidermal, mesenchymal, and neural lineages.
