Chonluten (Thr-Glu-Trp, T-EW) is a three-residue synthetic peptide originally derived from work on bronchial epithelial tissue extracts in the Khavinson research group. It belongs to the broader Khavinson short-peptide family — ultrashort synthetic peptides identified through fragment analysis of animal-tissue polypeptide preparations, each associated with a distinct source tissue. The way plasma-derived tripeptides such as GHK sit at the interface between metal-binding and receptor-signaling chemistry, the Khavinson tripeptides are studied as small tissue-specific regulators of gene expression in cultured cells. Avolio et al. (2022) characterized Chonluten in the human monocytic THP-1 cell line, examining tyrosine phosphorylation patterns of mitogen-activated cytoplasmic kinases and cytokine release patterns following bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation. The paper reports that Chonluten was among the Khavinson peptides that inhibited TNF and IL-6 release from LPS-stimulated cells in vitro. Khavinson et al. (2020, Molecules) reviewed the T-EW peptide alongside other short peptides in the immunomodulator series, and Khavinson et al.
