Description
Cardiogen is a synthetic short-chain tetrapeptide bioregulator studied for tissue-specific effects on cardiac tissue in laboratory culture. It has been documented in primary literature as a modulator of proliferation- and apoptosis-associated protein expression in explanted myocardial tissue. The way a return address routes mail to one recipient, Cardiogen's tissue-specific sequence is thought to direct its activity primarily toward cardiac-lineage cells in culture.
Zakutskii et al. (Adv Gerontol, 2006; PMID 17152728) documented a stimulating effect of cardiogen on organotypic heart-tissue explant cultures from both young (3-week-old) and aged (18-month-old) rats, relative to untreated control explants. Chalisova et al. (Adv Gerontol, 2009; PMID 20210190) documented that cardiogen produced a stimulating effect on cell proliferation in myocardial tissue-culture explants from young and old rats alike, alongside a decrease in p53 protein expression measured by immunohistochemistry. Levdik and Knyazkin (Bull Exp Biol Med, 2009; PMID 20396706) documented that cardiogen administration in a rat model of transplanted M-1 sarcoma was associated with inhibition of tumor growth that scaled with cardiogen concentration, attributing the effect to hemorrhagic necrosis and increased tumor-cell apoptosis within the tumor's vascular network rather than a direct cytostatic action.
