ACTH 1-39 is the complete, biologically active form of adrenocorticotropic hormone, a 39-amino acid peptide member of the melanocortin family. It has been characterized in the literature as engaging melanocortin receptor subtypes across multiple tissue systems, including the adrenal cortex and the central nervous system. The way a single master key can open more than one type of lock, ACTH 1-39 is described in research as acting on melanocortin receptor 2 in adrenal tissue and melanocortin receptor 4 in glial and neuronal populations.
Research Context
Lisak et al. (Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 2016; PMID 26944112) documented that ACTH 1-39 protected oligodendrocytes in mixed glial cultures from excitotoxic, oxidative, and inflammation-related injury, and found that conditioned medium from ACTH-treated astroglia carried a similar protective effect. Lisak et al. (Experimental Neurology, 2015; PMID 26300474) reported that ACTH 1-39 protected isolated rat forebrain neurons in vitro from apoptotic, excitotoxic, and inflammation-related insults across a panel of toxic agents. Phillips et al. (Journal of Physiology, 1996; PMID 8815218) investigated circulating ACTH(1-39) in the fetal sheep model, documenting its association with adrenal growth and steroidogenic enzyme expression following surgical disconnection of the hypothalamus and pituitary.
