What Does “Research Use Only” Mean on Peptides?

Every product we sell carries the same label: Research Use Only. You’ll often see it shortened to RUO. The phrase is short, but a lot of how we run the shop follows from it.
What the label means
A Research Use Only peptide is supplied for laboratory research and analysis, and nothing else. In the words of our Research Use Only policy, RUO products are “chemical or biological compounds manufactured and supplied exclusively for laboratory research and analytical purposes.”
The same policy is just as clear about what they aren’t. They are not approved as drugs, supplements, cosmetics or medical treatments. They are not for human or animal use.
RUO labels aren’t unique to peptides, either. You’ll see the same wording on many reagents and materials sold to laboratories.
What research use covers
Our policy lists the permitted uses:
- analytical testing and validation
- scientific investigation and educational research
- in vitro laboratory research
In other words, work that happens in a laboratory.
What it rules out
The policy also lists what RUO products are not supplied for. That includes:
- human or veterinary consumption of any kind
- clinical, therapeutic or diagnostic use
- compounding, repackaging or resale as drugs, dietary supplements or cosmetics
- any use outside legitimate laboratory environments
Why the label isn’t the whole story
A label on its own doesn’t decide what a product is for. Our policy points to 21 CFR 201.128 and sums it up in one line: intended use is determined from all representations, not just the label.
That’s the reason our site reads the way it does. Everything we write, from product pages to this blog, has to match the label. So we describe what a compound is, how to store it, and what a lab report says about it. We don’t describe what it does to a person.
Questions we don’t answer
Because of that, there are questions we won’t answer, however they’re asked. We don’t answer any question about using our products in people or animals. That follows straight from the label.
You’ll find what we can answer on this blog and in our FAQ: storage, shelf life, batch numbers, COAs, ordering and shipping.
Who can buy RUO peptides from us
When you order from our catalog, you confirm that you:
- are at least 21 years old
- are qualified to purchase and handle research chemicals
- will use the products only for lawful laboratory research
- understand the materials are not for human or animal use
- will follow all applicable laws
The full wording is in our Research Use Only policy.
Common questions
What does research use only mean on peptides?
That the peptide is supplied only for laboratory research and analysis. It’s not approved as a drug, supplement, cosmetic or medical treatment, and it’s not for human or animal use.
What are RUO peptides?
Research use only peptides, or RUO peptides, are peptides sold under a Research Use Only label, for laboratory research and analytical work.
What does a research use only label cover?
It sets the intended use of the product: laboratory research only. Our policy lists the permitted uses and the prohibited ones.
Why won’t you answer questions about human use?
Because Research Use Only products aren’t for human or animal use, so there’s nothing of that kind to discuss. We only answer questions about our products as research materials.
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. All Biopunk Peptides products are for laboratory research use only. They are not for human or animal consumption.
