Description
GHK (Gly-His-Lys) is a naturally occurring tripeptide first isolated from human plasma, distinguished from its copper-bound form (GHK-Cu) by the absence of a chelated copper ion. The way a lock accepts a specific key, GHK's histidine and lysine residues form a high-affinity binding site for divalent copper, a property investigated extensively in extracellular-matrix and gene-expression research.
Maquart, Pickart, Laurent, Gillery, Monboisse, and Borel (FEBS Lett 1988; PMID 3169264) investigated the tripeptide-copper complex in fibroblast cultures, observing a concentration-dependent stimulation of collagen synthesis independent of changes in cell number. Pickart (J Biomater Sci Polym Ed 2008; PMID 18644225) reviewed research characterizing GHK and its copper complex across a range of cellular remodeling processes, including chemoattraction of repair-associated cells and stimulation of collagen and related protein synthesis in laboratory models.
